Racine Zoo Adds Canada Lynx to Collection

Racine – The Racine Zoo is pleased to announce the arrival of a Canada lynx.  She was received from the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ontario, Canada after being rescued. The female lynx is estimated to be one-year-old.  She weighs approximately 20 lbs., is approximately 2 feet tall and between 2.5 and 3 feet in length. The lynx has completed her quarantine and is currently on exhibit in Great Cat Canyon between the Pride of Racine lion exhibit presented by Johnson Bank and the tiger exhibit.

In the wild, lynxes live across Canada, Alaska and the northern part of the continental United States.  They typically have a dense silvery-brown coat (which can turn reddish in the summer), a ruffed face and tufted ears.  They will grow to be larger than bobcats and over twice the size of a domestic cat.  Canada lynxes enjoy a solitary life and are mainly active at night.

“We are thrilled to add a Canada lynx to our collection. We specifically brought her to the Zoo as a tribute to Dorothy Janowski’s memory; we understand that the lynx was Dorothy’s favorite animal.  The donation of funds from her estate are ear-marked for Zoo capital improvements -- and a portion of her contributions are funding Gateway to Adventure and Walkabout Creek, both set to open in July. The opportunity to receive the lynx in conjunction with the construction is a perfect fit,” said Jay Christie, President and CEO, Racine Zoo.

The Racine Zoo is open daily.  Hours between Labor Day and Memorial Day are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The admission price is $4.00 for adults, $2.00 for children 3-15, $3.00 for seniors and children under three and Zoo Members are free. The mission of the Racine Zoological Society is to foster an enlightening and affordable wildlife experience that improves the bond between people and nature. The Society will provide for the recreation and education of the people, the conservation of wildlife and wild places, and the advancement of science.
